How a Project Works

[Stage 1] Talk It Through

Start in our showroom or book an in-home consultation. We listen first: how the room is used, what the light does, what's been bothering you.

[Stage 2] Design and Decide

We narrow the options to what actually fits your windows, your style, and the way you live, with real samples in your hands.

A roman shade is what happens when drapery and a shade agree: structured fabric folds that dress the window even while doing the daily work of light and privacy.

The Tailored Shade

Vignette® Modern Roman Shades

The engineered flagship is Hunter Douglas Vignette roman shades: consistent, contoured folds with no exposed rear cords and a clean stack that disappears into the headrail. Vignette modern roman shades come in flat and contoured fold styles, fabrics from translucent to room-darkening, and full PowerView motorization, which solves the one historic complaint about romans, the daily raise, with a tap. For homeowners who love the look but want shade-grade engineering behind it, Vignette is the line we demonstrate first.

Workroom Romans in Your Fabric

Because our family runs its own workroom, we also sew romans the traditional way: your fabric, your fold style, your lining. Flat folds read crisp and modern; soft and relaxed folds curve gently for casual rooms; hobbled folds keep their depth even lowered. Roman shades for living room walls, kitchen sinks, and breakfast nooks are the classics, and blackout roman shades with sewn-in liners turn bedrooms genuinely dark while looking like decoration rather than equipment.

Built and Hung Like Tailoring

Romans punish sloppiness: uneven folds and crooked stacks announce themselves daily. So we measure each opening, calculate fold spacing to the window's proportions, match patterns across the face, and weight hems so the shade hangs square. At install, the folds get dressed by hand and trained to stack evenly. The result is roman shades for windows that look pressed every morning without anyone pressing anything.

Fabric selection deserves the same care as the fold. Patterns want flat folds that display them; textures forgive every style; and kitchens earn a practical note, romans near the stove should use performance weaves, or yield to a roller in the splatter zone while romans take the breakfast nook. Motorization, available across both Vignette and our workroom romans, removes the one daily friction the category ever had. If you've been treating romans as the shade you admire in other people's houses, bring us the window you'd start with; this is the most rewarding category in the family to do properly.

FAQs

FAQs

Your Questions, Answered

What are Roman shades?

Fabric shades that draw up into horizontal folds rather than rolling onto a tube. The folds give them a soft, tailored, drapery-like face while keeping a shade's tidy footprint, which is why romans anchor so many designed rooms.

What's the difference between flat-fold and relaxed Roman shades?

Geometry and mood. Flat folds stack in crisp, even horizontal pleats: tailored, modern, pattern-friendly. Relaxed (or soft-fold) romans let the bottom swag in a gentle curve: casual, romantic, beach-house easy. Same mechanism, different personality; we'll show both folded in fabric.

Are Roman shades or roller shades better?

Different jobs. Romans lead with fabric presence and tailoring; rollers lead with minimalism and disappearance. If the window should be dressed, choose roman; if the window should be quiet, choose roller. Plenty of homes use romans in front rooms and rollers in work rooms.

What are the downsides of Roman shades?

Fairly told: the fabric stack occupies the top of the window when raised, deep folds collect a little more dust than a flat roller, and traditional corded romans want occasional fold-dressing. Lines like Vignette engineer most of that away, and motorization removes the daily handling entirely.

What's the difference between Roman shades and Hunter Douglas Vignette?

Vignette is a roman, perfected in manufacturing: permanently consistent folds, no exposed rear cords, a hidden stack, and factory-integrated motorization and warranties. A workroom roman offers unlimited fabric choice; Vignette offers engineered repeatability. We sell both and will tell you which your window wants.
