Designer Solar Shades (a.k.a. Designer Screen)

Our solar line is Hunter Douglas Designer Solar, often called Designer Screen: technical weave fabrics that filter the sun's intensity while staying visually open to the outside. The mechanics are simple and honest: the weave intercepts a large share of solar energy and visible glare at the window, so rooms run cooler, screens stay readable, and floors and fabrics fade dramatically slower. From inside, the view reads through the mesh like good sunglasses; the lake, the fairway, and the ocean stay exactly where you paid for them.

Openness, the One Decision That Matters

Solar fabrics are specified by openness percentage, the share of the weave that's open air. Tighter weaves (1 to 3 percent) block the most heat and glare and give the best privacy; more open weaves (5 to 10 percent) keep the view crispest. Indoor solar shades for a west-facing great room usually land tighter; a shaded view window can afford openness. We bring fabric samples to your actual glass at your actual worst hour, because openness chosen in a showroom and openness proven at 4 p.m. are different sciences.

Inside, Outside, and the Honest Difference

Interior solar shades handle most Florida rooms beautifully and motorize cleanly with PowerView, which matters on the tall view glass these fabrics usually cover. For lanais and true exterior sun shades for windows applications, outdoor solar shades and exterior solar shades products do exist, engineered for weather and wind, and they're a different specification conversation we're glad to have. Either way the goal is the same: outdoor sun shades levels of heat control with the polish of a custom interior treatment.

Solar shades also team well with the rest of the window. What is the difference between solar shades and regular shades?

Purpose. Regular shade fabrics manage light and privacy; solar fabrics are engineered weaves that intercept solar heat and glare while preserving the view through the material. Think of solar as performance equipment for sun-facing glass, and regular shades as general-purpose light control.

Will solar shades block UV rays and protect my furniture from fading?

That's one of their best arguments. Quality solar weaves block the overwhelming majority of UV at the window, which is the radiation doing the fading. Floors, rugs, art, and upholstery age dramatically slower behind them; in view-heavy Florida rooms, that protection alone often justifies the shade.

Can I see through solar shades from inside or outside?

By day, you see out and passersby mostly see reflection: daytime privacy with a view. After dark the physics flip; interior light makes the room visible through the weave. Rooms that need nighttime privacy get a second layer or a tighter fabric, and we'll plan that with you.

What openness percentage should I choose for my windows?

Tighter (1-3%) for harsh west and south exposures, maximum heat and glare control; more open (5-10%) where the view is the priority and the sun is kinder. Most of our installs land between 3 and 5 percent, but we decide with samples on your glass, not by rule of thumb.

Are solar shades a good fit for Florida sun exposure?

They were practically designed for it. Strong year-round sun, big view glass, and cooling bills are exactly the conditions solar fabrics target. For lanai-side walls and ocean-facing rooms, they're the first product we test, and usually the one that stays.
